Cheerleading Megaphones

What came first, cheerleaders or megaphones?

According to many sources, on Nov. 2, 1898, a University of Minnesota football fan was so upset to see his beloved Golden Gophers heading toward yet another defeat that he jumped from the stands, faced the crowd and led them chanting:

"Rah Rah! Sku-u-mah hoo-rah Hoo-rah! Varsity! Varsity! Minn-e-so-tah!"

Minnesota lost that football game. But that Minnesota student, Jack Campbell, became the nation's first cheerleader. And, that, according to cheerleading lore was the first time anyone recalls vocal cheerleading with a purpose. But poor Jack had to yell at the top of his lungs because he did not have a megaphone!

Cheerleading Megaphones Make the Difference

Cheerleading has come a long way since and now you can hear the cheerleaders in every corner of the stands thanks in large part to megaphones. Those long tubular objects have become synonomous with cheerleading. You can purchase cheerleading megaphones in your choice of color and size and have them customized with your team logo and mascot. You can even purchase megaphone bags to safely store your megaphone in.

Megaphones come in many sizes, shapes and materials. The most basic are made from virtually indestructible, high density, light weight plastic. They are water proof, can be painted or silk screened or decorated with school decals. If you prefer, megaphones can also be made from a high density polyethylene with nickel-plated mouthpieces.

Since the advent of plastic megaphones, schools have begun distributing smaller megaphones to fans. In fact many local merchants choose to place their company logo along with school information on megaphones they purchase and distribute for free.

Megaphones have become such a symbol of cheerleading that many other products and gift items are now made. For example we have found megaphone earrings and megaphone pendants, megaphone rings and megaphone necklaces. You can get cheerleader megaphone magnets for your refrigerator or megaphone keychains.

Clearly cheerleading has come a long way since those early days when, without the use of a megaphone, cheerleaders were limited to people sitting within much closer proximity.
