There is no question that the options available for a candy fundraiser are much different than they used to be.
But, yes, candy for fundraising is still very popular. And it is still popular for the same reasons as it has always been.
A candy fundraiser is a direct sale. That means that the seller has the product in their possession at the time of the sale and hands it directly to the customer. People have tried to sell candy as a pre-sell or brochure fundraiser in the past but it never worked out very well. People just were not willing to pay a few dollars for a couple of candy bars that they would get a few weeks later.
Candy is an impulse item. That’s another reason why candy fundraisers still work well. Ther are not many people who will say no to a child with a carrier of candy bars asking for support.
One of the reasons people question the popularity of candy for fundraising is the availability of candy at discount prices at grocery stores or warehouse stores. It is true that many stores offer candy as a loss leader. That means they are actually not making money or make very little on the candy. The store also does not need to give a fundraising group half the price of the candy bar.
The fact of the matter is that people will spend a dollar or two for a candy bar just like they always have. So, if you have been considering holding a candy fundraiser, today’s market should not negatively impact your sales. So don’t be nervous.
