But what happens if one class in your school needs to raise money?

Students in Class

Let's spend a few minutes talking about the best ways to raise money for a specific class fundraiser.

How Big is the Class?

In fundraising size can matter. So take a moment to consider how many students will be participating in your class fundraiser.

Let's divide class size into 3 categories:

1. Classes with 10 or less students

2. Classes with 11-19 students

3. Classes with 20 or more students

Small Class

Very small classes can be severely limited by their own numbers. Goals might need to be somewhat realistic. But some small classes have really done very well.

If you have fewer than 10 students we suggest you consider a brochure fundraiser with no minimum.

Remember brochure fundraisers don't cost anything to start and you don't buy any product until your sale is complete so you will never have excess inventory.

Some of the choices that fit here would be candle fundraisers and coffee fundraisers. Both are easy to sell products. But are reasonably priced. The brochures offer enough products to make the sale interesting to most people yet there are few enough to make delivery manageable.

Medium Size Class

Medium sized classes have many more options available to them.

Unlike classes with less than 10 students minimums should no longer effect decision making.

Medium classes can choose any of the brochure fundraisers if they don't want to purchase fundraising products in advance to sell. And they can also take advantage of programs like candy fundraisers or lollipop fundraisers. Those are direct sale items where you purchase the amount of product you think your students can sell and send some home with each child for them to sell on their own.

Candy fundraisers don't work as well for smaller classes because you need to sell quite a bit of candy to raise reasonable amounts of money. But medium sized classes have enough sellers that direct sale products work as well as brochure items.

Large Class

Large classes have no limits.

So they can choose brochure fundraisers or direct sale fundraisers. But they can also choose from among the discount card fundraisers that can have minimums too high for small or medium classes.

In fact you will find lots of senior or junior classes raise lots of money by having custom discount cards designed specifically for them.

These discount cards typically have offers from 10-12 local merchants that can be used for a full year. Local businesses love to advertise on these cards because it create brand loyalty and builds regular traffic. It's a great medium for very targeted ads.

The front of the card usually has either a school or class logo or even a photo of the actual students so that the card is clearly associated with the specific class.

Discount cards offer terrific proft margins. Classes can earn as much as 90% profit.

Spend a Little Time Planning

Lots of classes decide at the last minute they need to raise money and immediately choose the first class fundraising idea that remotely makes sense.

Please don't do that!

If you take just a few minutes to formulate a game plan you will be so much better off. So here are some things you should consider when planning your class fundraiser:

1. How much money do you need to raise?

2. Do the students in the class care about what you're raising money for?

3. Do students prefer to sell or would they rather hold an event?

4. Will you be competing with any other school fundraisers?

5. Have you set individual goals for your students to raise?

6. How quickly do you need the money?

Before looking at class fundraising ideas answer those questions and you will make much better decisions.

We won't spend a lot of time on the importance of your students enjoying their fundraiser but it should go without saying that students will be so much better if they enjoy what they are doing.

You Can Do Better

You know your students much better than we do. So you are uniquely qualified to determine what will get them excited and on board.

But please don't dismiss this element of class fundraising.

Consider:

1. Getting your principal involved. We've seen principals actually dye their hair if the kids reach a goal.

2. Give get out of homework passes

3. Let them wear pajamas or some other themed clothing to school

4. Offer an ice cream party

Hopefully you get the idea. Create a fun environment and your results with skyrocket.
